When Pat Metheny comes to town, I automatically order tickets for Andy (who appreciates jazz) and Diana (who doesn’t find Pat too annoying). Since Pat has been touring with Brad Mehldau, this band is considerably different from the other configurations that we’ve heard.
In theory, this was Brad Mehldau’s band, with Pat Metheny added on. In practice, however, Pat’s presence is so strong that it seemed to push Brad into being a sideman. All of musicians seemed to having fun, and the blend was great. Brad is a half generation younger than Pat, so there’s the upside and downside of touring with a living legend.
