Distractions, reflections

David Ing, at large … Sometimes, my mind wanders

Muzda Bakery

Muzda Bakery: “What kind of bread is that?” “Just bread”. Shop touting Gujarati specialities and Indian biscuits offers fresh western style wheat loaves in a flat boule shape. Toronto east side scene of Chinese bicyclist in shorts asking for 3 loaves, a South Asian visitor dressed in white robes suggesting to buy 4, so I acquiesced to take home 4 loaves. Vicky Keith Point

Vicky Keith Point: Long route to Toronto Harbour Lighthouse, southmost tip of Tommy Thompson Park via the endikement road on the lakeward side of headland by bicycle, since the bridge on the more direct path is out. Loop road is ringed by rubble. some stacked in artistic ways by other visitors. CN Tower and bank towers of downtown Toronto across the water. Fabian's Cafe

Fabian’s Cafe: Tidy German pastry shop serving wiener schnitzel and crepes for lunch, an out-of-the-way meeting place with friends further out on the east end. Adam completed his master’s thesis in September, and then moved to the Detroit area in October to take a job.  The timing put him into convocation with the spring 2015 group.  From Toronto, we picked up his grandfather and drove towards Waterloo, while he came from the other direction.  We converged in Waterloo for lunch at a local restaurant that serves northern-style Chinese dumplings.

Over at the PAC, Adam had already registered ahead for his black academic gown.

We were early enough to be at the front of the line into the gymnasium where the ceremonies would be held.

Diana and I opted for a more strategic stage right position for photography.  This separated us from our sons and their grandfather, who chose the bleachers on the other side.

When the procession started, people stood up to get a view.

The procession came down the middle of the gym.  Adam’s group was to be seated towards the front.

All of the graduates were asked to rise at the beginning of the ceremony.

On June 13, 2013, Eric was conferred the degree of Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto.  He chatted for moment with President David Naylor, and then shook the hand of Chancellor Michael Wilson.

Studying in the Faculty of Arts and Science, Eric’s degree was granted by St. Michael’s College.  The scene was a little quieter in the college quadrangle, in front of the sculpture titled Michael (after the archangel) by Anne Allardyce.
