2007/07/06 Nick “Brownman” Ali, Yonge-Dundas Square

Yonge-Dundas Square, for the most part, is a disloved public space. It’s flat; it lacks shade when it’s hot; and doesn’t have any features around which people would naturally congregate. There is a stage where free musical events are now regularly scheduled, but the arrangement of tables and chairs seems a bit strained.

Yonge-Dundas Square

The venue is an easy bike ride from home, so I took the occasion to see Nick “Brownman” Ali play with his band Cruzao. This is the latin-jazz-funk configuration that he leads (amongst many others). In an unusual lineup, there were two bass players that evening.

The square is open, so that the sightlines from the side are better than from the front.

It’s nice to live in a town where there’s a choice of live music to listen to … and venues are at least open to families.
