Although my hotel had the address of Manhattan Beach, it’s actually about 1-1/2 miles from the ocean. I had taken the drive up Route 1, but didn’t have time to actually go to Manhattan Beach proper. Thus, I squeezed in a little detour at the only time left, in the late evening. The most striking view in the dark is these mysterious lights.
On foot, it’s actually the pier, with holiday lights on. There’s supposed to be an aquarium at the far end of the pier, but at 9:30 p.m., I’m sure it’s closed!
Up the hill, the restaurants and the bars seemed to be doing good business, although this was a Wednesday night.
I get the feeling that Manhattan Beach serves the California “beach culture”. Relaxed in the daytime, partying at night!
