Distractions, reflections

David Ing, at large … Sometimes, my mind wanders

2009/07/07 Meadowbank, Rydalmere, Parramatta, Featherdale

As an alternative to seeing Australian animals at the Taronga Zoo Sydney, we thought a trip to the Featherdale Wildlife Park would be a bigger adventure.  The latter is northwest of Sydney in Doonside, and we were staying at a hotel on the north shore in Macquarie Park.  Since we had bought a 7-day orange travelpass with prepaid paths that radiates out from the city centre, taking the train southwest with an easy connection to a scenic Parramatta River ferry bound northwest seemed to be a reasonable routing.  The first leg on our journey was the train that would bring us to Meadowbank.  The direction to the ferries seemed clear.

di_20090706-191526-meadowbank-station.jpg

It’s a bit of a walk from the train station to the ferry.  Constitution Road in Meadowbank offers little appeal for tourists.

di_20090706-191626-meadowbank-constitutionroad.jpg

We wended our way through residential areas to find a few signposts directing us to the wharf through the park.

di_20090706-192442-meadowbank-to-wharf.jpg

Obviously, the way to the ferry would be down to the riverbank.

di_20090706-192508-meadowbank-park-path.jpg

From Meadowbank on the north side of the Parramatta River, the south shore suburbs are a little farther than I would want to swim.

2009/07/06 Woolloomooloo, Art Gallery NSW, Oxford Street

Having ended the previous day at King’s Cross station, we returned back to the same station in the morning to walk north on Victoria Avenue.  In the daylight, we got a better view of the large houses and apartments.

di_20090705-205552-victoriaave.jpg

Looking west down the McElhone stairs was Woolloomooloo, and central Sydney beyond that.

di_20090705-205654-mcelhone-stairs-down.jpg

We had mapped out a stroll to see the Sydney neighbourhoods, so we proceeded down the stairs.

di_20090705-205812-mcelhone-stairs-family.jpg

Wended our way west and north, we approached Cowper Wharf across a wide roadway, on the edge of Potts Point.

2009/07/05 Manly, North Head, Manly Ferry, King’s Cross

While most people visiting Australia would probably stay in Sydney and take the ferry across the harbour to the north shore, we were already staying in a suburb on the north side.  From the North Ryde station, we rode the CityRail to Chatswood, tranferring at St. Leonards for the 143 bus to Manly.  This put us near the Manly wharf, where we saw children playing on the rock sculpture on the plaza.

di_20090704-191904-manlywharf-terminal-rocks.jpg

Walking away from the ferry wharf, the pedestrian promenade to the beach is called The Corso.  On a Sunday morning in a Sydney winter, the benches were empty.

The children’s playground had a few climbing on the equipment.

Fountains emerging from the sidewalk would be more popular if more children were around.

2009/07/04 Wynyard, The Rocks, Sydney Harbour

On the Saturday, we had arranged for a meeting around lunchtime in The Rocks.  We had enough time in the morning to start one CityRail station south of our destination, and walk northeast.  Near the Wynyard station, we encountered the Australian Aboriginal Art Gallery down a flight of stairs on George Street.

There was a broad selection of didgeridoos, which our sons didn’t recognize.

The shopkeeper accommodated us with a demonstration.

di_20090703-193042-ausabartgall-digideroo.jpg

The pots and paintings were interesting, but not the style likely for our livingroom.

Taking a print back on  plane might have been manageable, if we wanted to carry a packing tube.

Excursion to Hvitträsk, the home/studio of architect Eliel Saarinen, and childhood home of Eero, who grew up around his father’s work.  Kirsti and Jari pointed out the traditional Finnish touches in the home, interesting of the light of the father creating in a more traditional style while the son developed the modernism.  The exhibits showed a number of unrealized plans, which makes we wonder about the relationship between architects and clients in years before I was born.  After touring the house, we walked down to the lake, where Kirsti was searching for Finnish chanterelles.
