We enjoyed Suzanne Vega's performance at The Mod Club, but are getting too old to be standing up for hours at a club.

I admire musicians who have long careers. I didn’t see Suzanne Vega on her last trip to Toronto — some 10 years ago! She was on tour promoting her new album, Beauty and Crime, with a stop at The Mod Club, so Diana and I got tickets.

I was impressed by her stage presence. She stood up straight, right at the microphone, with great confidence. This has to be the result in her training, not in music, but in dance at the New York High School for the Performing Arts.

For musicians, it’s fun to see a show with top-notch sidemen. Playing keyboards and singing harmony was Alison Cornell, who Diana and I had seen playing with Joe Jackson on the Night and Day II tour.

Suzanne performed Blood Makes Noise, backed with the incredible technique of Mike Visceglia on electric bass.

Richard Julian opened the evening, solo on guitar. His sense of humour came through on “God the third”.

It’s been a few years since I attended a stadium show, and I prefer clubs for the greater immediacy of live music. Diana and I both appreciate clubs that offer seating — reserved or unreserved — because we’re getting a bit old to be standing for hours. At The Mod Club, the best that we could do was to retreat to the side of the main floor, and we were glad to at least have a rail to lean agains.
