David Ing, at large … Sometimes, my mind wanders

2006/12/13 Manhattan Beach at night

Although my hotel had the address of Manhattan Beach, it’s actually about 1-1/2 miles from the ocean. I had taken the drive up Route 1, but didn’t have time to actually go to Manhattan Beach proper. Thus, I squeezed in a little detour at the only time left, in the late evening. The most striking view in the dark is these mysterious lights.

On foot, it’s actually the pier, with holiday lights on. There’s supposed to be an aquarium at the far end of the pier, but at 9:30 p.m., I’m sure it’s closed!

Up the hill, the restaurants and the bars seemed to be doing good business, although this was a Wednesday night.

I get the feeling that Manhattan Beach serves the California “beach culture”. Relaxed in the daytime, partying at night!

  1. Ben Ing says:

As the home base for most of the Los Angeles Kings hockey players, Manhatten Beach is probably one of the more well-known areas for Canadian emigres to Los Angeles. In the off-season, it is not all that unusual to see Rob Blake and other hockey players playing beach volleyball at Manhattan Beach.

It’s unfortunate that you weren’t able to see Manhattan beach during the day. It’s such an active beach. Just like yous said, it is the epitomy of a “beach culture”.
